Q. "What do you think about reading notes that get left in the pockets of pants that go through the laundry?" - Mom of 15-yr-old daughter, Lincoln,NE

A. If you have reason to be concerned about something with your daughter then go ahead and read the note. If not, then I would give your daughter the note and let her know you found it but didn't read it. This will build trust between the two of you.

In Michael J. Bradley's book, Yes Your Teen is Crazy! he writes compelling arguments for both sides of the issue of balancing safety with privacy. I would recommend reading this book.

Q. "My four-year old always acts shy when he meets new people. He comes across as rude. What can I do to encourage him to not be so shy? Mom, Golden, CO

A. I wouldn't make too big of a deal out of this behavior, many kids go through this stage. When our kids did this we tried to ignore it, and definitely do not make any excuses for their "shyness". This phase ended quickly. However, if you want more information, a good website is www.markway.com. This website provides great information on social anxiety and ideas on dealing with kids who are "painfully shy".
