Let's TalkLet's Talk is a space designed for you to send me questions. Then I will post questions and answers on this page. I am not an expert, but I am a mom (and a journalist), and I'm good at finding answers. I will seek expert opinions for you, recommend books, articles or websites and, if it is something I have had experience with, I will also give you my personal opinion. Please feel free to ask me any question you may have about your family life. Email me on the link under "Ask Me" with your questions. I'm excited to learn along with you! Sincerely, Jean p.s. I will keep all personal information confidential. Let's Talk Questions & Answers: Q. "What do you think about reading notes that get left in the pockets of pants that go through the laundry?" - Mom of 15-yr-old daughter, Lincoln,NE A. If you have reason to be concerned about something with your daughter then go ahead and read the note. If not, then I would give your daughter the note and let her know you found it but didn't read it. This will build trust between the two of you. In Michael J. Bradley's book, Yes Your Teen is Crazy! he writes compelling arguments for both sides of the issue of balancing safety with privacy. I would recommend reading this book. Q. "My four-year old always acts shy when he meets new people. He comes across as rude. What can I do to encourage him to not be so shy? Mom, Golden, CO A. I wouldn't make too big of a deal out of this behavior, many kids go through this stage. When our kids did this we tried to ignore it, and definitely do not make any excuses for their "shyness". This phase ended quickly. However, if you want more information, a good website is www.markway.com. This website provides great information on social anxiety and ideas on dealing with kids who are "painfully shy". |
